The future of Cornwall Anime

Postby Jade » Wed Jul 07, 2010 11:36 am

I had to cancel July's event after almost everyone pulled out and it became unviable. This thread is to discuss the organisation's future - and whether or not it has one.

Since the start we have consistently had around 10 people turn up. Each event takes time and effort to organise and money to promote and M-Mad have very kindly allowed us to use their venue extremely cheaply.

I appreciate that Launceston is not ideal for everyone, but no one has arranged anywhere else for us to hold screenings. I am aware that there are many anime fans in the town and within easy driving distance who are not attending the events. Anime is a niche interest and if fans within walking distance of the venue aren't interested then there seems little point in continuing.

I have tried to ensure we're screening the shows people want to watch by allowing everyone to propose and vote for the schedule, but very few people do this. If they're not coming because they don't want to watch what is being shown, it seems odd that they are not proposing alternatives.

Does anyone think it is worth continuing or should we call it a day?

Aww I was looking forward to tonight.

I think we should try to keep going. How many people do we really need to turn up to make it viable?

I found 2 spare VHS recorders as well.

At least I checked the forum before driving to launceston!

We need at least ten and that's pretty poor tbh. We were getting ten or 11 including Keep It Secret and they've pulled out because they've moved to Plymouth. Four of the regulars told me yesterday and today that they wouldn't be there, leaving us with five or six people which makes it pointless. If we don't suddenly get a surge of interest then we might as well just watch at each other's houses instead of going through all the hassle of planning, printing and putting up posters, booking the venue, etc. I know of at least ten anime fans in Launceston and two of them have been once each so there's apparently very little interest in organised screenings.

I can start coming now, as I'm on my summer holidays and not weighted down with coursework.

I can try and bring an entourage of about 4-5. They said they would go even if I wasn't but apparently they have never bothered.

Awesome :D If you came and brought your friends that would immediately make it viable along with those who would have come this time. Can you and your friends do August 11?

Holy hell!!!! :O thats not good. hmm it's all well and good to say we need ten people but sometimes not everyone can come,
like me, I've only been able to go to two of the anime nights since they've been running. Also the showing is on quite a random day in the middle of the week.
I don't want it to close down because it's the only cool thing in launceston that I look forward too :(

If, like you say, people sometimes can't come and there aren't many who want to come anyway then that sadly makes it unviable. Three of us can't be sitting there saying 'oh well, everyone else had valid reasons not to turn up.' There either need to be lots of people who come occasionally or a few people who always come; a few people who occasionally come isn't workable.

If you want to run one on another night you're very welcome to but I do stuff at the weekends so I couldn't myself. When we ran a poll on Facebook about a year ago the most popular days were Wednesday and Thursday, and Westcountry Anime meet on a Thursday so we didn't want to clash. Having it on a random mid-week night means most people have nothing better to do instead! If it was on a Friday or Saturday night I expect hardly anyone would come (I wouldn't) because they'd be down the pub with mates or at a gig or whatever.

Cool :D We've been doing them monthly so the beginning of August would be the next one. I'm afraid I'm away the first week.

How would everyone feel about us showing Ponyo and the first episodes of Heat Guy J and Hellsing?
